As a fan of Jodi Picoult, I was looking forward to reading her new novel. By the time I finished reading this novel, I was left with a feeling of astonishment. It is at once a storyline of such depth on the research of grieving elephants, and so rich in the storylines of those involved.
Jenna Metcalf’s mother, Alice, disappeared after a caregiver was trampled by an elephant. Jenna’s father has been in a psychiatric institution since that time, and Jenna lives with her grandmother. Jenna has not been able to forget her mother, or come to terms that her mother would leave her. Jenna does everything she can to find her mother, looking online and reads all of Alice’s old journals.
Alice was a research scientist studying elephant grief. Alice spent most of her time with the elephants that she loved. While in Africa, Alice met Thomas who ran an elephant refuge in New Hampshire. They went back to New Hampshire, married and had Jenna. All the while the love of elephants based their existence. As time goes by, Jenna is unable to find anything to support her queries about her mother. Jenna finds two people to help her, Serenity a doubted psychic, and Virgil Stanhope an older private detective. Jenna, Serenity, Thomas and Alice tell the story in alternating chapters.
Jodi Picoult does a great deal of research for her books, and with this one, she went to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, and met with Professor Abigail Baird. She also went to Vassar with Abigail Baird, who taught her all about the brain and how memory works. Then, they went to Botswana to work with Jeanetta Selier, a Ph.D. researcher who studies herds in the Tuli block. Jodi Picoult goes on to tell us about the fascinating aspects of elephants and what she learned.
